Chapter 20

Seira

Once again, Seira found herself inside Toryn’s large tent. This time she was seated at a small table near the central fire. The table was full of food and drink for their evening meal. She was so hungry she was tempted just to start eating her way through all the dishes, but it would hardly be polite to start without her host, and Toryn had withdrawn to his curtained-off bedchamber to shift forms and dress.

Fabric rustled at the back of the tent, and Toryn emerged from his bedchamber. He moved with that grace she’d come to expect of him. Centaur or human, it didn’t seem to matter. The male was a perfect merging of elegance and beauty.

And presently, he looked far too pretty. His dark hair had been combed until it lay in long sleek locks that cascaded over his shoulders. He wore a long robe and loose-fitting pants. The material was lightweight and flowed when he walked. It also didn’t leave much to the imagination, she noted.

Her eyes were drawn to the strip of bare chest where his robe was open at the front, his sash failing to keep the sides closed.

“You could have started without me,” Toryn said as he settled into the other chair on the opposite side of the table.

“That would have been rude.” She selected a plate with warm bread and cheese and added a few slices of meat. “I always thought it strange that centaurs eat meat.”

He nodded. “We actually prefer grains, vegetables, and greens to meat, but it takes a lot to feed a centaur body. And unlike our horse relatives, we can’t consume forage as swiftly as they can, so we adapted to intake other foods.”

“That makes sense.” She glanced down at her meal. “I think I’m almost pure carnivore myself.

He shoved two more platters with meat piled high on them toward her. “Is that why you always gaze at me with a look of hunger?” His grin struck her full force. “A predator’s instincts kicking in?”

She snorted and rolled her eyes. “If I can hold a conversation with it, then it is not food.”

“Ah. Good to know.”

Something had been nagging at her since she’d been led into the king’s great pavilion. There hadn’t been time to talk about it until now.

“Why haven’t I seen any of my fellow priestesses here? I know we lose a few to your people each year. But I didn’t see any familiar faces among the nobles in the king’s tent or the crowds of servants and workers that greeted our arrival.” She swallowed hard. “Are they chained up somewhere?”

“Not chained up. Though they are spelled so they can’t touch their magic until they’ve settled in and we know they won’t try to harm our people in their bids to escape.”

“But where are they?”

“White Cove, the centaur city far to the south.” He grinned at her. “I was getting to that.”

She grunted. “I’ll try to master my impatience. No promises. Why don’t they travel with the rest of the court?”

“White Cove is the safest part of our territory.
